ABOUT THIS PROJECT
It started as a small experiment.
After years working as an IT executive, far removed from hands-on development, I wanted to see what building software looks like in the AI age.
The idea is simple: pick a real problem and work through it directly. Portfolio modelling turned out to be a good candidate — my Excel model had become fragile enough to raise concerns, and most existing tools just didn't feel good enough to explore ideas properly.
So this is both an app and an ongoing experiment.
AfterworkLab starts with a simple tool for exploring portfolio longevity. You build a model, adjust assumptions, and see how a portfolio evolves over time. Change something, and you immediately see what changed and why. Everything runs on straightforward, deterministic calculations with visible assumptions.
It's the same Excel model but with added convenience of a purpose-built app.
Along the way, I’m documenting the process — what works, what doesn’t, and what building with AI actually feels like in practice. The blog is part of the experiment.
The current version is intentionally simple. Over time, it may evolve into a more conversational interface — something you can interact with in plain language, exploring scenarios and asking questions as you go. Meanwhile, my goal stays the same: solve a relatively simple problem, while figuring out how AI is reshaping software development.
Thank you for reading.
